Locally known as "The Gangsters", these males have reportedly killed as many as 40 other lions in the Sabi Sands, mostly other males but also cubs and some females. Though this sounds barbaric, and has significantly reduced the lion population in the Sands, it is in reality a good thing. They have mated with many of the females and so are refreshing the stale gene pool which had existed in the area.
